From Horseshoe falls through Llangollen as far as town weir the river Dee is one of the classic canoeing stretches of Britain.  However it's not for me.  Click here for details

0 km – Llangollen

Put in at car park next to Ponsonby Arms.  

This is below the dangerous town weir and the grade IV Town Falls.   The next few miles consist of numerous Grade I to II rapids, until Trevor Rocks. 

2 km - Farm bridge

5 Km - Trevor Rocks rapid. Grade III  Site of the first UK slalom competition in 1939.

6 km – Y Cysylltau Bridge carries the B5434 between Trevor and Froncysyllte

Built in the mid 17th century.

6.2 km Pontcysyllte aqueduct carrying the Shropshire Union canal

Built by Thomas Telford in 1805.

19 Km - river bends sharp right. 

About 100 yards down stream - small weir. Central block of concrete protruding.  Portage left. 

20 km - Boat inn left.  Access

21.5 Km - Large Weir Portage left I think.

22 km - Erbistock / Overton Bridge.  Land left below.

31 km - Bangor-is-y-Coed medieval bridge.  Built 1660 probably by Inigo Jones.

Church of St Dunawd.  War memorial.  

Stumps of demolished railway bridge

35 Km - Suspension bridge.  Beautiful once, but now badly maintained and apparently not in use.  

36 Km river Clywedog joins left  

Big house left.  Set back from river.

Tight meanders now from here to Holt.

45 km A534 Farndon bypass bridge

46 - Holt bridge, Holt left, Farndon right.

Spring tides sometimes reach as far as Farndon although the normal tidal limit is Chester weir. 

Landing right bank just above the bridge.  Parking space and picnic point at the foot of the red sandstone Dee cliffs. A Site of Special Scientific Interest

Built in 1338 this was toll bridge for at least 500 years.  The toll-house was sited over the 5th arch from the Holt (left) bank.  In 1643 it was the site of the battle of Holt Bridge in the Civil War

From Holt onwards the both river banks are lined with extraordinary holiday chalets

53 km Iron Bridge 1824 – Designed by Thomas Telford.  A fine private bridge providing road access for the Duke of Westminster’s Eaton Hall estate
